Join us as we dive deeper into the world of above ground garden planters!

The Benefits of Above Ground Garden Planters

Improved Soil Control

One of the primary advantages of using above ground garden planters is the enhanced control over the soil quality. This presents an opportunity to curate the soil composition specifically tailored to your plants' needs. Instead of relying on potentially poor in-ground soil, you can fill your planter with high-quality organic soil. This is crucial for ensuring your plants receive the nutrients they require for healthy growth.

Accessibility

For those with limited mobility or back pain, raised garden planters offer a way to engage with gardening without added strain. No more bending down to tend to your plants—everything is at a comfortable height. This accessibility feature expands the gardening community, allowing everyone to enjoy the art of gardening regardless of physical limitations.

Pest and Weed Control

Above ground planters can reduce the number of weeds that compete with your plants as they are lifted off the ground, often resulting in fewer weed problems. Moreover, elevating your garden may keep certain pests at bay, such as rabbits and groundhogs, who find it trickier to reach the plants.

Extended Growing Season

Another significant benefit is the warming effect of above ground garden planters. By raising your garden beds, particularly in cooler climates, you'll notice that the soil warms up earlier in the spring. This can lead to an extended growing season, allowing you to plant earlier and harvest later.

Aesthetic Appeal

Above ground planters come in various styles and materials, allowing for personal creativity in garden design. Whether you prefer a classic wooden look or a modern metal finish, these planters can seamlessly blend into any garden landscape while enhancing the aesthetic value of your outdoor environment.

Choosing the Right Materials

Wood Types

When it comes to building above ground planters, wood is often the go-to material due to its durability and aesthetic appeal. At Garden Greenland, we emphasize using high-quality, untreated woods such as cedar, which is naturally resistant to rot and pests. Although cedar may come at a slightly higher cost, its longevity in outdoor environments makes it a worthwhile investment. Alternatively, pine can be considered for a budget-friendly option, but it will require more maintenance and may not last as long.

Composite Materials

For the environmentally conscious gardener, composite materials can serve as a viable option. Made from recycled materials, composite planters offer durability and are resistant to fading, ensuring a long-lasting addition to your garden setup.

Metal Planters

Metal planters are another option that has risen in popularity due to their modern aesthetic and durability. Though they may retain heat more than other materials, proper planning is crucial to avoid overheating plants, particularly in hotter climates.

Soil and Fill Material

The soil you fill your planters with is equally important. Opt for high-quality potting soil enriched with organic matter, compost, or slow-release fertilizers to ensure your plants thrive. Utilizing a well-draining mix will also prevent root rot and provide adequate nourishment.

Tools Required for Building Above Ground Planters

Basic Hand Tools

  1. Saw: A handsaw or circular saw for cutting the boards to your desired length.
  2. Drill: For making holes and securing the screws. A cordless drill can simplify the process.
  3. Screwdriver: To drive the screws into place.
  4. Tape Measure: Critical for measuring measurements accurately.
  5. Level: Ensures your planter is even and stable.

Safety Equipment

  • Gloves: Protect your hands from splinters and rough edges.
  • Safety Glasses: Essential for protecting your eyes while cutting or drilling.

Optional Tools

  • Miter Saw: For accurate angle cuts if building a more complex planter design.
  • Clamps: Useful for holding pieces in place while assembling.

Step-by-Step Guide to Build Above Ground Garden Planters

Step 1: Planning Your Design

Before you begin, sketch out your plan. Consider the size of your planter based on the space available and the plants you wish to grow. Common sizes range from 4' x 4' to 4' x 8', but feel free to customize it to fit your garden needs.

Step 2: Selecting and Preparing Materials

  • Purchase Materials: Head over to your local gardening or hardware store and select your preferred wood or composite materials.
  • Cutting the Wood: If you are using standard-sized boards, cut them to the lengths specified in your design, ensuring all pieces are uniform.

Step 3: Assemble the Bottom Frame

  1. Lay Out Boards: Start with the bottom of your planter. Arrange the boards into a rectangle that will form the outer dimensions of your planter.
  2. Attach Corners: Drill holes at each corner and fasten them with screws to create a sturdy base frame.

Step 4: Build the Vertical Sides

  • Attach Vertical Boards: Stand up the vertical boards around the edges of the base frame. Ensure they are plumb and secure. Use your level to check for evenness.

Step 5: Reinforce Corners

  1. Bracing: For added stability, consider adding corner braces by cutting shorter boards and attaching them diagonally from the base to the top.
  2. Secure: Fasten with screws, reinforcing all joints to withstand the pressure of soil and plants.

Step 6: Construct the Bottom (Optional)

If you want more durability, build a solid bottom for your planter, especially if you plan to place it on hard surfaces. Cut boards to fit the bottom and secure them in place, ensuring to leave gaps for drainage.

Step 7: Fill the Planter

Once your planter is built, it's time to fill it with high-quality, organic soil. Layer a bottom layer of coarse materials (such as gravel or coarse sand) to promote drainage, followed by a mix of potting soil and organic compost.

Step 8: Plant Your Seeds or Seedlings

Now that your above ground garden planter is complete, it’s finally time for the fun part—planting! Choose plants based on the sun exposure available, and remember to follow the recommended spacing for optimal growth.

Step 9: Maintenance Tips

  1. Watering: Regular, consistent watering is key. Make sure to check the soil moisture regularly.
  2. Fertilizing: During the growing season, consider adding organic fertilizers or compost to the soil for nutrients.
  3. Pest Control: Monitor your planter for pests and manage them swiftly to keep your plants healthy.

Step 10: Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labor

With everything set, now is the time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your gardening efforts. Take time to appreciate how your above ground garden planters enhance not just your garden, but your overall gardening experience.

FAQ

What types of plants can I grow in above ground planters?

Above ground planters can accommodate a wide range of plants, including vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The key is to choose plants suitable for the depth and moisture you can provide.

How deep should my above ground garden planter be?

A depth of approximately 12 inches is ideal for most plants, especially those with moderate to deep root systems. For shallow-rooted crops like herbs or lettuce, a depth of 6 inches may suffice.

How do I prevent my planter from drying out too quickly?

To retain moisture, consider adding a layer of mulch on top of the soil after planting. Ensure adequate watering routines are established, especially during hot weather.

Is it necessary to line the bottom of my planter?

While it's not mandatory, lining the bottom can help with drainage. You can use landscape fabric, hardware cloth, or a plastic liner with drainage holes.

Can I use treated wood for building above ground planters?

It's best to avoid treated wood as it may leach harmful chemicals into the soil. Instead, opt for untreated wood like cedar, which is naturally resistant to decay.

By understanding these foundational elements, you're ready to embark on your gardening journey with confidence and knowledge! Together, let’s elevate our gardening experiences with the joy and satisfaction of nurturing our plants. Happy gardening!
