Wooden garden furniture has a charm and warmth that can bring any outdoor space to life. However, as much as we love this timeless aesthetic, the reality is that wooden furniture faces relentless exposure to various weather conditions that can take a toll over time. If you've invested in beautiful wooden pieces, you may find yourself wondering: should you cover your wooden garden furniture when it's not in use? In this post, we will delve into the reasons why covering your garden furniture can be an essential practice, how the weather impacts these beloved pieces, and practical solutions to keep them in their best shape year after year.

Introduction

Wooden garden furniture often becomes the centerpiece of outdoor gatherings—think about those cozy summer evenings spent on a patio table shared with friends, or serene mornings sipping coffee on a bench in the garden. Yet with this enjoyment comes the responsibility of ensuring these wooden pieces remain intact against moisture, UV rays, and fluctuating temperatures. Did you know that neglecting to cover your outdoor furniture could reduce its lifespan significantly?

As a manufacturer of premium gardening products at Garden Greenland, we believe in providing you with the knowledge and tools you need to maintain your outdoor decor. By the end of this post, you'll gain insights into the weather's effects on wooden furniture and discover best practices for keeping them protected.

In this article, we will cover:

  • The various types of wood used in garden furniture and how they react to the elements
  • When it’s advisable to cover your wooden garden furniture
  • Important factors to consider when choosing covers
  • Essential maintenance activities to prolong the life of your furniture
  • Final recommendations on cover usage

Together, we'll explore these areas to empower you with the best practices for maintaining your cherished wooden garden furniture.

Understanding the Types of Wood Used in Garden Furniture

The first step in deciding if and when to cover your wooden furniture is understanding the type of wood it is made from.

Softwoods vs. Hardwoods

  1. Softwoods: Common softwoods suitable for garden furniture include pine, cedar, and fir. These woods are generally less durable, making them susceptible to moisture damage, discoloration, and rotting without proper care. For instance, untreated pine may warp or allow fungi to thrive if exposed to high humidity for extended periods.
  2. Hardwoods: On the other hand, hardwoods such as teak, oak, and mahogany are known for their durability and resistance to weather. Teak, in particular, contains natural oils that repel moisture and insects, allowing it to withstand harsh conditions much better than its softwood counterparts. However, even hardwoods will fade to a lovely silver-gray patina if left untreated in the sun, which may be desired by some, yet others prefer to maintain the original warm hues.

Summary of Wood Characteristics

  • Softwoods: Requires more frequent maintenance and protection; susceptible to rot and fading.
  • Hardwoods: More durable and weather-resistant; less maintenance required, but still benefits from protection.

Understanding the wood type in your furniture will guide your decisions on whether to cover it, especially when considering vulnerability to the elements.

The Weather’s Impact on Wooden Garden Furniture

Given the natural properties of wood, we must acknowledge the significant impact weather can have on your furniture:

Rain and Humidity

  • Moisture Absorption: Wood naturally absorbs moisture from rain. This absorption can lead to swelling and warping, ultimately compromising the integrity of your furniture. Prolonged exposure can create an environment for mildew and mold to flourish, especially if the furniture is not frequently cleaned or maintained.
  • Winter Damage: Snow and ice pose additional risks in colder months. Water can seep into cracks, freeze, and expand, leading to further cracking and weakening of the wood.

Sunlight and UV Rays

  • UVA and UVB Damage: The same sunlight we cherish for a warm afternoon can degrade wood finishes and colors over time. UV rays act as silent destroyers, leading to fading and dryness, particularly in softwoods. Consequently, your furniture may lose its rich color and appeal.

Temperature Fluctuations

  • Expansion and Contraction: Just as wood can absorb moisture, it can also expand and contract with temperature changes. This continual stress can cause splits and cracks over time.

Summary of Weather Effects

  • Rain: Absorption can lead to rot and mildew.
  • Sun: Fades color and dries out wood.
  • Cold: Causes ice damage and cracks.

Given this understanding of how weather impacts wooden garden furniture, covering them becomes a proactive measure to protect your investment.

When Should You Cover Your Wooden Garden Furniture?

Timely use of covers can protect your furniture from weather-related deterioration. Here are some scenarios:

During Prolonged Periods of Non-Use

If you know you won’t be using your garden furniture for an extended time—whether due to seasonal changes or an impending vacation—covering it will help keep it safe from dust, dirt, and the elements.

During Inclement Weather Conditions

If you live in an area known for sudden rainstorms or extreme weather, covering your furniture during adverse conditions is a no-brainer. This approach shields from moisture accumulation and potential rotting.

When Expecting Snow or Severe Cold

In regions where heavy snowfall is common, covering your furniture helps prevent moisture from seeping in and freezing—something that can cause significant long-term damage.

Summary on Timing

  • Cover when not in use for extended periods.
  • Protect during inclement weather.
  • Shield during winter storms and severe cold.

While these cover periods are critical, they bring us to the next crucial point: ensuring the covers themselves are suitable for the job.

Choosing the Right Covers for Your Wooden Garden Furniture

Selecting a cover is important—after all, the wrong choice can defeat the purpose of protection. Here's what you should consider:

Material

  • Waterproofing: Look for materials that offer waterproof properties to repel rain. Layered protection can include ripstop polyester, breathable fabric, or specially designed weather-resistant covers that impede moisture while allowing airflow.
  • Breathability: Covers that are not breathable can trap moisture under the cover, ultimately causing mold growth. Ensure the covers have ventilation features to prevent this issue.

Fit and Size

A cover that’s too small won't provide adequate protection, while an oversized cover can blow away in the wind or collect debris underneath. Measure your furniture and select covers designed specifically for your piece’s shape and dimensions.

Durability

Choose heavy-duty materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions, particularly if you experience high winds or heavy snowfall. Look for covers with reinforced seams and durable clasps or ties.

Color and Style

While color may seem trivial, opt for covers that blend well with your outdoor aesthetic. Dark colors may fade over time, while lighter colors can show dirt easily; choose a compromise that offers both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Summary for Cover Selection

When choosing the right cover for your wooden garden furniture, prioritize waterproof, breathable materials that are durable and properly sized to ensure maximum protection.

Essential Maintenance for Wooden Garden Furniture

While covering your furniture is beneficial, regular maintenance ensures longevity even in between cover uses.

Regular Cleaning

Keep your wooden furniture spruced up with regular cleaning. Dust, dirt, and debris can settle on surfaces and scratch or damage the finish over time. A simple solution of mild soap and water can help wipe away grime without the stress of heavy scrubbing.

Protective Treatments

To preserve the natural beauty of your wooden pieces, apply wood oils or sealants every few months. Products like teak oil or specialized outdoor wood treatments create a protective barrier against moisture while enhancing the wood's color.

Periodic Inspections

Conduct regular checks to assess your furniture's condition. Look for signs of decay, rot, or damage, as early identification allows for timely repairs before problems escalate.

Storing Cushions

If your wooden furniture comes with cushions, store them indoors when not in use, or at least cover them to protect against rain and fading. If left exposed, moisture can seep in, leading to mold and shortening their lifespan.

Summary of Maintenance Routines

By cleaning, treating, inspecting, and caring for cushions, you can ensure your furniture remains sturdy and appealing for years to come.

Conclusion

To answer the question, should you cover wooden garden furniture when not in use? The short answer is a resounding yes. Regular covering not only defends against the relentless elements but also prolongs the life and beauty of your cherished outdoor investments.

FAQs

1. Does my wooden garden furniture need to be covered every night?

Covering your outdoor furniture every night can protect it from dew and unexpected rain, keeping it clean and prolonging its lifespan. Even during the summer, night temperature drops and moisture exposure can damage unfinished wood.

2. Are patio furniture covers really worth it?

Absolutely! Good-quality covers are an investment that can significantly increase your furniture's lifespan and decrease your maintenance workload. They protect against sun fading, water damage, and dirt accumulation.

3. What is the best material for patio furniture covers?

Look for breathable, waterproof materials that resist mold growth, such as ripstop polyester or specialized outdoor fabrics. Ensure they fit well and come with ties or fasteners to keep them secure on windy days.

4. Can I leave my furniture uncovered in sunny weather?

While it's tempting to leave furniture uncovered, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can lead to fading or drying out the wood. Using a breathable cover during sunny periods can help maintain color and integrity.

5. How can I maintain my wooden garden furniture without using a cover?

Regularly clean your furniture with mildly soapy water, apply teak oil or protective stains every few months, and store cushions indoors when not in use to ensure lasting quality and appearance.

By prioritizing the protection and care of your wooden garden furniture, you can enjoy a beautiful and functional outdoor space for many more gatherings to come.
