Introduction

Finding the right gear for a weekend landscaping project often starts with a search for a brand you trust. If you have ever felt the weight of a sturdy shovel or the precision of a sharp pair of shears, you know that quality equipment makes the work feel less like a chore. Ames is one of the oldest tool brands in America, known for its long history and durable construction.

At Garden Greenland, we understand that having the right tool for the job is the foundation of a successful growing season. Whether you are looking for a classic digging shovel or a specialized garden hoe, knowing where to shop can save you time and effort. This post covers exactly who sells Ames garden tools and how to choose the best equipment for your outdoor space.

Major Retailers That Sell Ames Garden Tools

Ames is a widely distributed brand, making it relatively easy for home gardeners to find their products in person or online. Most major home improvement stores carry a selection of their core inventory, such as shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows.

National Home Improvement Centers

The most common places to find Ames tools are large-scale retailers like The Home Depot and Lowe’s. These stores usually stock a variety of Ames digging tools, including round-point shovels and square-head spades. Because Ames produces different lines ranging from homeowner-grade to professional-grade, these retailers offer a broad spectrum of price points.

Hardware Cooperatives

Local hardware stores that are part of larger cooperatives, such as Ace Hardware or True Value, frequently carry Ames products. These locations are excellent for gardeners who prefer a smaller shopping environment or need specific advice from staff members. While their in-store selection may be smaller than a big-box retailer, they can often order specific Ames tools for you to pick up later.

Online Marketplaces

If you are looking for a specific specialty tool that isn't in stock locally, online marketplaces are your best bet. Buying online allows you to compare different handle materials, such as fiberglass versus North American ash wood, to find the weight and feel that suits your gardening style.

Key Product Categories From Ames

Ames is best known for its long-handled tools, but the brand offers a wide range of equipment designed for different aspects of yard maintenance. When looking for who sells Ames garden tools, it helps to know which category you need.

  • Digging Tools: This includes classic shovels, garden spades, and trenching tools.
  • Striking Tools: Ames produces picks and mattocks for breaking up tough or compacted soil.
  • Cultivating Tools: You can find garden hoes, cultivators, and rakes for preparing soil beds and managing weeds.
  • Cleanup Tools: This category covers leaf rakes, poly rakes, and scrapers for seasonal yard maintenance.

Quick Answer: Ames garden tools are primarily sold at major home improvement retailers like The Home Depot and Lowe's, as well as through hardware cooperatives and online marketplaces.

How to Choose the Right Gardening Tool

Selecting the right tool involves more than just finding a brand name. At Garden Greenland, we believe the best tool is the one that feels comfortable in your hands and matches the scale of your garden.

Consider the Handle Material

Ames tools typically come with either wood or fiberglass handles. Wood handles, often made of ash, provide a classic feel and a natural flex that many gardeners prefer for digging. Fiberglass handles are generally more weather-resistant and offer high strength, making them a good choice if you tend to leave your tools outdoors or work in very heavy, wet clay soil.

If you need smaller hand tools for precision work, consider browsing our garden tools collection for ergonomic options. (garden tools collection)

Match the Tool to the Task

Before heading to a retailer, evaluate the specific job at hand. For turning soil in a small raised bed, a hand trowel or a small garden hoe is often more effective than a full-sized shovel. If you are working in tight spaces or container gardens, specialized equipment like our garden scissors or compact shovel sets can provide the precision you need.

For compact and precision tools, see our garden scissors collection.

Ergonomics and Weight

A heavy tool might feel durable, but it can lead to fatigue if you are working for several hours. Look for tools with "D-handle" grips if you need extra leverage for digging, or cushioned grips if you are focused on comfort.

Tool Type Best Use Case Key Feature to Look For
Round Point Shovel General digging and lifting Tempered steel blade
Garden Hoe Weeding and soil aeration Secure head-to-handle connection
Bow Rake Leveling soil or spreading mulch High tooth count for fine leveling
Leaf Rake Gathering grass and leaves Flexible tines to prevent turf damage

If you need long-handled digging tools or a broader selection, check our garden shovel collection.

Alternatives for the Home Gardener

While Ames is a staple for traditional long-handled tools, modern gardening often requires a more diverse kit. If you are expanding your tool shed, we recommend looking at specialized sets that cater to specific gardening styles, such as container gardening or high-intensity vegetable growing.

For those focusing on plant health and precision, a high-quality garden tools set often provides better value than buying individual pieces. These sets usually include hand transplanters, cultivators, and trowels that are sized perfectly for working around delicate root systems in grow bags or decorative pots.

Key Takeaway: While Ames is a go-to for heavy-duty digging and raking, supplementing your kit with ergonomic hand tools and specialized equipment like watering system kits ensures you have the right level of precision for every task.

Maintaining Your Garden Tools

Regardless of where you buy your tools, proper maintenance will extend their life significantly. Even the most durable steel can rust if not cared for correctly.

  1. Clean after every use: Use a stiff brush or a hose to remove dirt and mud from the blades and handles.
  2. Dry thoroughly: Never store tools while they are wet, as this leads to rust on metal and rot on wood.
  3. Oil the metal: Occasionally wipe the metal heads with a rag soaked in a small amount of mineral oil to create a protective barrier against moisture.
  4. Sand wooden handles: if a wooden handle becomes rough, lightly sand it and apply linseed oil to prevent splinters.
  5. Check for loose parts: Periodically ensure that the bolts or rivets connecting the head to the handle are tight and secure.

For protective wear while maintaining tools, browse our garden gloves collection.

Improving Your Gardening Experience

A great shovel is only one part of the equation. To truly enjoy your time outdoors, consider the environment you are creating. Many gardeners find that adding garden decoration like fountains or statues makes the labor feel more like a retreat.

If you are working in the heat of the day, ensuring you have a reliable watering & irrigation range is just as important as having the right digging tools. Using automatic timers or drip kits allows you to spend more time using your tools for planting and less time hauling heavy hoses around the yard.

Bottom line: Ames offers reliable, traditional tools available at most hardware stores, but a complete garden strategy also includes specialized hand tools, proper irrigation, and a well-decorated space to keep the work enjoyable.

Conclusion

Ames garden tools remain a popular choice for their durability and accessibility. You can find them at most large home improvement centers and local hardware stores. By choosing the right handle material and tool shape for your specific project, you can make your yard work much more efficient. At Garden Greenland, we believe that every gardener deserves reliable equipment that makes connecting with nature a rewarding experience. Once you have your primary digging tools sorted, consider exploring our grow bags collection and watering system kits to take your garden to the next level.

FAQ

Does Ames offer a warranty on their garden tools?

Yes, most Ames products come with a limited warranty that covers defects in material and workmanship. The length of the warranty can vary significantly depending on the specific tool line, with some professional-grade items offering longer coverage than basic homeowner models. It is important to keep your receipt and check the specific packaging for the warranty details of your purchase.

If you want replacement parts or to compare tool longevity, our garden equipment collection can help you find compatible maintenance items.

What is the difference between Ames and True Temper tools?

Ames and True Temper are both brands owned by the same parent company. While they share a similar manufacturing heritage, they are often marketed as different product lines with slight variations in handle design, blade materials, and price points. In many retail stores, you may see both brands sold side-by-side, serving similar purposes in the garden.

For a broader selection of comparable brands and tool styles, see our all products collection.

Are Ames tools made in the USA?

Ames has a long history of American manufacturing, dating back to the late 1700s. While many of their products are still manufactured or assembled in the United States using global components, some specific items or parts may be sourced internationally. To be certain, you should check the labeling on the specific tool at the retail location, as manufacturing locations can change based on the product line.

How do I sharpen an Ames garden shovel?

Sharpening a shovel makes digging through tough roots or compacted soil much easier. You can use a metal file to hone the edge of the blade, following the original bevel angle. Secure the shovel in a vise or hold it firmly against a workbench, then push the file away from your body along the edge of the blade until a sharp, clean surface appears.
